AISI440C stainless steel is a commonly used martensitic bearing grade stainless steel usually heat treated to between 58-62 HRC. Operating temperature is approximately up to 170 Degrees Celcius. After heat treatment, 440C is capable of attaining the highest strength, hardness and wear resistance of all the stainless alloys. This hardness is due to the high carbon content of the steel. The high carbon content also makes this stainless steel very magnetic, and lowers the corrosion resistance.

If your application requires a harder material see SAE52100 Chrome Steel. If you require even greater corrosion resistance (at the expense of speed, load carrying and precision) see 316 Stainless Steel.

The main component of the steel is Fe (Iron) with the addition of the elements shown in the following chart

Max. % Chemical Composition
C Si Mn P S Cr Mo
0.95 to 1.20 1.0 1.0 0.04 0.03 16.00 to 18.00 0.75
